Hornets have no sting

One down and two to go. What a thrilling afternoon. The sun was beaming down on us, warming our passions for the beautiful game. Full of nerves for what might yet be possible, both teams began brightly. Both pressed, desperate to make an impression. The Leicester lads seemed the more composed, though the referee did not agree, awarding free kicks that frankly mystified the Leicester faithful.

Finally a breakthrough came when Richie Wellens was upended in the box. Waggy calmly tucked away the subsequent penalty. Leicester gradually pressed their advantage, and were rewarded with a superb goal from Paul Gallagher.

Leicester were motoring when - shock horror - the referee decided that an over-zealous challenge on a Watford defender merited a sending off. Surely now Steve Howard's season must be over. I truly hope not.

Two goals up and down to ten men - we've been here before. In a great position we self destruct. But not today. The sending off seemed to galvanise the squad like never before. First Jay Spearing beats the Watford defence, and then James Vaughan produces a break like never before.

Our euphoria was tempered only a little by a late goal from Watford defender Martin Taylor. By then the damage had been done.

The three points were desperately needed as Blackpool, Cardiff and Swansea all won. The victory keeps us in 5th position and nicely poised. But we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. Blackpool remain just four points behind us. A win against Preston on Saturday will ensure we secure a play-off berth. They are no slouches and have often been a bogey team for us, though I remember with great fondness Nils Eric Johansson's late winner at Deepdale.

The future remains in our hands. Come on you Foxes!
